The United Kingdom, along with 27 other countries – mainly from the West – has condemned Israel for the killing of Palestinian civilians at aid distribution sites, and the starvation of Palestinians.
Foreign secretary David Lammy said he was “appalled, sickened” by what Israel were doing to Palestinians, claiming that he deeply regrets that Britain can’t stop the ‘war’.
92 people have been killed whilst trying to get food, with at least 19 deaths from starvation in the past 24 hours – a famine caused by Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
The United Kingdom still supplies Israel with parts for F-35 fighter jets, allows Israeli planes to stay in airbases, and facilitates the killing of Palestinians by providing RAF reconnaissance.
It is worth noting that while Lammy denies the UK’s involvement in the misnamed ‘war in Gaza’, multiple human rights groups including Amnesty International have condemned the UK’s lack of actions, calling upon them to end arms sales to Israel, whether direct or indirect. The UK has over 300 arms sales licenses in operation.
The UK have also until now defended what has been described by rights experts and human rights groups as genocide, refusing to take any action including cutting diplomatic ties or imposing economic sanctions, with Keir Starmer having previously defended Israel’s ‘right’ to withhold power and water from Gaza.
The UK must take further actions to fulfil not only its legal obligations, but moral obligations. This is genocide, and the West is not only failing to stop it, but benefitting from it.
Gaza is starving – they need action NOW.
